A bat that suits your height, strength and style of play makes batting easier and helps you avoid strain. Here is what to look at before you buy.
1. English willow or Kashmir willow
English willow is lighter and more responsive, and is the usual choice for leather-ball matches at club level and above. Kashmir willow is denser and tougher, which makes it a sensible, budget-friendly option for beginners, practice sessions and tennis-ball cricket.
2. Pick the correct size
Bats come in junior sizes (often numbered 1 to 6), Harrow, and full-size Short Handle (SH) for most adults. When you stand in your batting stance, the top of the handle should sit near your hip. A bat that is too long feels heavy and slows your swing.
3. Weight and pick-up
Two bats with the same weight can feel very different. A good “pick-up” means the bat feels balanced and light in your hands. Choose a weight you can control comfortably through a full innings rather than the heaviest bat you can lift.
4. Grains, edges and sweet spot
Straight, evenly spaced grains are a sign of quality willow, though grain count alone doesn’t decide performance. Thicker edges give more power on mistimed shots. Players who drive off the front foot often prefer a mid-to-low sweet spot, while players on bouncier pitches may prefer a higher one.
5. Knocking-in and care
A new leather-ball bat needs to be knocked in with a bat mallet before match use, and a light coat of raw linseed oil on the face (not the splice or handle) helps protect English willow. Store your bat away from heat and damp.
